  • What Rock Sliders are you running and why?

    Hey all,

I'm making plans for a roll cage and rock sliders and was hoping for some opinions.

Here are the sliders I am looking at:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/8565439...7631215145822/

I like both designs, so I am undecided, but if I go with the Hanson sliders, I'm thinking about frenching in a step or as a fourth option, just making them myself.

My only concern is I would like to use them as a step as well, but none of them are tied into the frame. James Duff and some other sites say the tube style can be used as steps, but others say not to use them as steps b/c of the body damage it would cause over time.

Anyone have any of these that can provide a real world answer, if the statement is just a blanket disclaimer or if they cannot be used as a step.

    Thanks,
    Brian

How are your rockers currently? Are they already either rusted or crunched? If so I say cut them off and weld up tube either directly welded to the body or to the frame. (mine are to body and have been brilliant, 4x6x3/16", use them to pivot on rocks on the con.
If your rockers are still alright then the bolt on setups arent bad but a good crunch on a rock will still damage your rockers and more. Ask daddy4zack

Thats how I rub...I mean roll!

I had Hanson's.. They are great!! Strong too.. But if you take a big hit the rocker will stay bent and the hanson rebounds.. so brace well..Now I have cut off the rockers and gone with 2x8x.188..

If you dont want to cut. I would still suggest bracing each to the frame..

My rockers are in great shape and I still have my front tank, so I will only be able to attach to the frame towards the front of the rockers. How are they as a step without frame support?

Got my Hansens from Daddy and love them! I"ve landed really hard on them and they just laugh at the rocks. If you space the hardware just right you shouldn't have any problems.

Hey Doug, what did you use to attach them up top? Looks good. I've got a set I need to clean up to put on my rig.

Those look very similar to the ones I made. 3x3 square tube inside the recessed area under the rocker, 2x3 angle to come up the rocker and 1 3/4 nerf bar. Strong, but mine are not tied into the frame and caused the body to curve inward a bit after a hard hit.

Re: What Rock Sliders are you running and why?

I copied the idea from another member here and they are strong and can take a beating! I used 2x5 1/4" steel for the sliders themselves and used three mounting points on each slider to the frame using 2x2 1/4" steel tubing.I angled and capped each end of the slider with steel plate.

Just be sure to leave a gap between the slider and your body if you go this route, so when the body flexes it doesnt crush into the slider.

I also drilled and tapped each slider to use them as my air tanks!

X2 that is what I run. I have taken some very hard hits on them without a single issue. I am well aware of their limitations and have seen the damage pics from others - I am either lucky or just extremely careful with my line choices (or both). Definitely attach them with bolts spaced all along the top and bottom and not just at the ends, that is a recipe for disaster. I also ran some flat stock on the inside of the rocker to bolt the bottom of them to. Seems nice and stout thus far.

anything that can take a hit from a boulder with the weight of a Bronco on top of it and survive, can act as a step without any additional reinforcement. I like your idea of the frenched-in step too, but the Hansons are basically flat along the entire top. Some grip/pool/skateboard tape would be much easier. Paul
