  • Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement

I am wondering if anyone knows of a shop in or near san jose that can remove the old rear wheel bearings and press-on new rear wheel bearings? More specifically, is there a shop open on weekends that can do this kind of work?

I have no idea if the rear bearings have ever been replaced (probably not) and there is no indication they are bad but it seems like it would be a good idea to replace them. I can remove and install the axle shafts myself I just do not have access to a press.

    Thanks in advance!

Stuart, I've used Rearend Specialties in Santa Clara. Just got off the phone with them and they quoted me $60. I don't believe they're open on the weekends. If you pull them, I'll run them down for you next week. Done while I wait.

Chill the axle, heat the bearing in an oven, drops right on!

Hmm... Thanks for the tip though wouldn't heating the bearing possibly damage it or cause premature failure?

In my search for bearings there seems to be two different sizes available (2780/2900lb axle and 3300lb axle); will either bearing fit? I would like to get the heavier duty bearings if they will fit.

I think I figured out the wheel bearing sizes. I am guessing small vs. big bearing diff. I am suprised they offer the small bearing for a '74.

              Hello,

I have a 50 ton hydraulic press in my garage here in Fremont. If you can't find a shop this weekend, you are welcome to service the bearings yourself here. It doesn't take very long.

This is how I did mine, I heated the bearings and collars in the oven at 200*, put the axles in the freezer. Although they didn't just drop on for me, a good sized piece of pipe, used like a slide hammer, worked great.

Thanks again James for letting me use your press. I finished the install this evening and went for a test drive which went well.

Not sure putting parts in the kitchen appliances at my house would go over very well. I appreciate the advice though.

                    Thanks again everyone!
