  • Need a picture of a 74 steering column shaft set up

Trying to put one together, a used one I bought, On-line diagrams leave a lot to be desired...

Need to see what it looks like at the rag joint end - how it is assembled with plastic cone, washer, adjuster (I have been told how it should be, but it does not look right to me)

If you have one with the steering wheel off, well that would be icing on the cake... with the metal cone, spring, I guess there is no snap ring...

    Thanks, Doug

You probably have this figured out by now but just in case I'll take a stab at it. You mentioned rag joint so I'm going with 1974 P/S. Dealing with just the upper steering shaft. here's the order.
        1. Rag joint
        2. Shaft with steel flange at the bottom to bolt to the rag joint
        3. Shaft clamp, pushes up against the lower bearing
        4. bearing sleeve
        5. bearing
Now because you mention plastic cone I'll run through the parts of the earlier style.
        1. Rag joint
        2. Shaft with steel flange at the bottom to bolt to the rag joint
        3. Shaft clamp, pushes up against the felt washer
        4. bearing sleeve/cone
        5. bearing

I highlighted the differences in red. As for springs there are none at this section of the steering shaft. There might be a shift tube spring in the column and there would be the shaft spring at the top under the steering wheel. Good luck!

Flange, adj collar, washer(no felt?), plastic cone

Metal cone, spring, steering wheel and then nut... no snap ring

74/75 column so loose the plastic cone at the bottom and it should work fine. The steel cone at the top is normally a pre 74 thing too. The spring just pushes down on the bearing at the steering wheel end.

Another thought about the cones. If they don't fit down into the bearing then they are not going to be used. What I'm seeing in your pics are later model parts that don't use the cones.

If you feel that I need to make changes, I can call Justin and get the correct parts coming...

I would rather get this together right now, before it goes into the bronco... I do not want to have issues later... (the cones do not fit down into the bearings... edit)

              Thx, Doug

From the pics all I can see is the need to get rid of the cones. Everything else should go together fine provided the bearings (#2689) and sleeves (#2676) that hold them are in good shape.
