  • T-case advise

Some of you may know that I broke my t-case and I am in the process of trying to decide a fix. I was looking at the Atlas and STak 2 and 3 speed units but they are real pricey. I found a NP 205 on pirate for $150 and thought the Lomax 3 to 1 gears would make a decent case that costs under $1200.

    http://www.jbconversions.com/pages/p...205/index.html

What are you thoughts out there? Should I just wait and ditch wheel'n this summer and get the Atlas or Stak? Has anyone had any experience with the Lomax gears ? I know in the future I could rig up the 203 with an adapter or add a Klune to the 205. Just trying to think it through

    Thanks FM <><

The gears in the Lomax are huge!! Bigger than the Atlas... But last I heard they hadn't made a case for the Ford yet. When they do, this is the case I want for my 205. That thing is super beefy!
Please tell me I'm wrong and they have a Ford case now.....

I'm not familiar with the Lomax gears, but I can share what I did. I have a 2 speed Atlas (4 speed hadn't been announced when I drained my wallet a few years ago).

I had a stone-stock tee shift Dana 20. I had an NV4500 sitting in my garage that I planned to install. I made a spreadsheet of all the t-case options I was considering, including modifying my Dana 20, doing a 203/205 doubler, and the Atlas. I tried to think of every adapter, nut, bolt, tranny cover, etc. that I would need so the cost totals would be more accurate (and depressing). In the end, the Atlas was the most expensive, but only by a couple of hundred dollars, and it was brand new with a warranty. If I was doing it now the results might be different, but I do like the Atlas a lot. I got the 4.3:1 version, gearing-wise it's been a good match for how I use my Bronco. With the NV4500 in 5th, top end end in low range is about the same as with my NP435 and D-20.

        Re: T-case advise

Lomax gears will not fit in a Ford 205. They only make them for the Chebby 205's.

I was going to go with the Stak, but after doing some research, there is no provision for hooking up a Ford VSS to the Stak. Being EFI, this was not an option for me.

So I decided on the Atlas. Bullet proof, waranty, bling and you can choose from alot of different gearing options and order exactly what you want.

          Re: T-case advise

Atlas cases from what I've seen are worth the money. One day when I feel like spending a bunch of $$, I'm going to go the NV4500/Atlas route. It is a very nice combination. I just can't see spending a boatload of money beefing up an old case when the Atlas is ready to go and is plenty beefy, plus has synchronized gears!

So Patrick... did you pull the trigger and get an Atlas???

Chuck, I can't remember what t-case you blew up, but if it was a dana 20 you should get a take out one for now, and save up for the atlas. I got my last 20 for free, and I have seen them for under 100. Just a thought.

Chuck I do beleve you will need a new tranny if you go the 205 route. And it would be ezer to go to a Atlas or Stak with a NP435 out of a 4X4 use there tail shaft adapter. Not a 100% on this but maybe someone else will chime in

one big selling point with stak was i didnt need to buy an adapter so all i had to buy was the case and now drivelines. im also fabbing up a vss for it because the one that comes with it is a hall effect

                      Re: T-case advise

Thanks everyone for the advise especially regarding the fact that the gears by Lomax are for chevy only.

I didn't break the case, I knocked teeth off of the reduction gear ( aftermarket 3.15:1)and it makes a horrible knocking sound. I am talking to Delta to see if he can hook me up but I need to also look for a long term fix.

Pat I obviously haven't been around alot - when did you get the Atlas and what did you do with the doubler set-up. Why did you change, did something break??

                      Thanks again,

This is an e mail I just got from JB conversions about the Lomax 205 transfer case. Too bad. I want one of these.

Thanks for asking but for now, we don’t have plans for a Ford version.

                        Thanks

                          Re: T-case advise

                          Chuck,

I have the Nv4500 and the atlas 4 speed with the 10.34:1 reduction. Yes very pricey but for the quality, strength, warranty, syncro'd gears, and most importantly the variety of gears you get with the 4 speed you cannot beat it. Right now Galen and I are finishing up with the steering on my bronco but it should be back on the road soon. Anytime you want to come check it out you are more than welcome.

Just like I left on your voicemail, I still have that Np205 that came with my nv4500. If the np205 route is the way you want to go, it is all yours. You helped me out so much with my bushings when I was in need. Just let me know.

                          Kyle

No nothing broke. I new right from the beginning that wanted a NV4500, but at the time I was building my rig, I couldn't afford to put everything on it that I wanted to. So I went with the NP435 and have been very happy with it thus far. After doing the UA this year though, that got me thinking about the NV4500 again. Because the NV is about 7 inches longer than the NP435 is, I don't have room for my 203/205 set up anymore. It would be pushed back right into my 4-link crossmember. So after doing allot of research on the various t-cases on the market today, I think the Atlas is the cream of the crop and the best option for me. I'm still saving my pennies to purchase one though.

Hey Kyle, thanks alot for the offer I am thinking it over. I will let you know. Sounds like your rig has come along way since I last saw it. Good for you. I may have to swing by and check it out.

Pat thanks for the info since I may ,down the road, go the 4500 route.
