  • Extrmely hot poser steering fluid

A year ago today I purchased my 71. Turned out the engine was bad so I decided to swap to EFI. Found a used Explorer engine with the GT40 intake and heads. I also installed hydroboost along with a 4x4x2 box.

Today was the day to finally fire it up. First attempt and it turned right over and came to life. The only problem is that the power steering fluid heated up instantly. It got so hot that the braided lines were untouchable and the fluid started to burn.

I did notice that there was only fluid returning from the steering box and not the hydroboost unit. This makes sense to me but as this is my first time working with it I am only guessing.

Anyone run into this problem? Or have an idea what is going wrong here?

If I was to guess I'd say you've got a blockage in one of the lines. PS fluid needs to be able to circulate to keep cool and if its getting backed up somewhere and forced to stay in the pump I could see it getting hot. The pump probably has a pressure relief valve which is what is keeping your lines from bursting.

Check your line routing. Sounds like a line is crossed.

Thanks for the info. I don't know exactly what happened but it has fixed itself. The next day I went out to work on it and noticed that the fluid level had dropped. I added fluid and fired it up. No more problem. My best guess was that there was an air in the system that was not allowing the fluid to flow.

          Thanks for the help!
