  • Non-bronco tech: Anyone ues a laptop based OBDII scanners

Need to check codes on my daughter's 2001 Cherokee. I guess the days of rental/loaner scanners are over at Autozone and Kragen.

I have seen some USB style gizmos that can be used with a laptop; anyone have experience with those, or know of a unit that isn't big bucks but works?

    Something like this:

I bought one for my dad for Christmas a couple of years ago. The USB interface is pretty generic - basically adapts the OBDII port to USB and from there its the software that matters. The adapters all conform to basically the same standard and the one I bought came with trial versions of several OBDII programs. I don't think he ever bought a license for any of them but the trial software at least displays the code and lets you reset codes. The full versions have a little more functionality but for the basics, the trial versions work well.

So the $30 USB dingus worked out OK, got it from Amazon in a couple of days. Found a misfire code, cleared that and no more codes.

Not sure how to interpret some of the other info, though. Anyone know where to find info on the TID numbers?
